Homemade Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  • Ingredients:
  • - 1 pound ground beef or ground Italian sausage
  • - 1 can 28 ounces crushed tomatoes
  • - 1 can 15 ounces tomato sauce
  • - 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • - 1 medium onion diced
  • - 3 cloves garlic minced
  • - 1 tablespoon sugar
  • - 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
  • - 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • - 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • - 1 bay leaf
  • - Salt and pepper to taste
  • - Fresh basil or parsley for garnish optional

Instructions

  • Instructions:
  • In a large pot or skillet, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
  • Then, add the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute until fragrant.
  • Add the ground beef or sausage to the pot, breaking it apart with a wooden spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  • Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste. Mix well to combine all ingredients.
  • Add the sugar, Italian seasoning, oregano, thyme, bay leaf, salt, and pepper. Stir to incorporate the spices evenly throughout the sauce.
  • Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and let it simmer for 30-50 minutes, stirring occasionally. This will allow the flavors to meld and the sauce to thicken.
  • Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning if needed. Remove the bay leaf before serving.
  • Serve the sauce over your favorite pasta and garnish with fresh basil or parsley if desired.
